TECHNOLOGY

The Rheonix CARD® (Chemistry And Reagent Device) technology offers versatility that can not be found in any of today’s competing technologies: It combines proprietary, high-volume, low-cost manufacturing methods, on-chip flow control, and fully-automated operation to deliver innovative products for the "point-of-care" (POC) and "point-of-use" (POU) markets, as well as higher throughput products for hospital and central-laboratory applications.

Key intellectual property covers revolutionary chip fabrication methods, on-chip valving and pumping capabilities, system control, and on-CARD® applications.

Software control of the pneumatically-actuated system allows precise manipulation of all assay characteristics such as reagent volumes, flow rates, mixing, reaction times, and temperature control.

Individual assays for POU/POC applications can be run on a completely-portable system, powered by a 12-volt battery, while a desktop-sized robotic workstation can be used to run multiple analyses in parallel.

The completely disposable CARD® can be used to quickly miniaturize and automate new and existing assays. Important features include:

  • On-chip valving
  • Bi-directional pumping
  • Multiple reagent storage and dispensing
  • Wide range of flow (μl-ml) handling
  • Structural 3-layer simplicity and rigidity
  • Surface compatibility for biological assays
  • Fully-automated operation
  • Homogeneous material surfaces
  • Extremely rapid prototyping
  • Low-cost, scalable, and reproducible manufacturing capabilities

Rheonix® technology allows sophisticated molecular and/or immunologic assays to be performed automatically by analysts of various skill levels, including unskilled. Furthermore, the CARD® can be used remotely or at central labs with minimum instrumentation or space requirements.

With the 2008 acquisition of Innovative Biotechnologies International (IBI), Rheonix has augmented its core product line with the addition of novel electrochemical biosensor technology. Integrating the biosensors with the CARD® technology enables the creation of a highly-sensitive assay with digital readout of results on a single, microfluidic CARD®.
